The Department of English owes its origin to the establishment of the college in 1948. It is one of the oldest Departments in the college. The department has had an illustrious past. A number of students have achieved University positions in different years and brought glory to the department as well as the institution. Since its inception, the department of English has been imparting quality education to the students. Our Alumni have been placed on various notable positions in the areas of Administration, Defence Services and Academics etc.
The department offers English in M.A., B.A. Pass Course, B.A. (Hons.), B.Sc.-I, BBA-I and BCA-I. It also offers two Short Term Courses – one on Communication Skills and another on French Language. There are eight regular teachers and one on deputation in the department. All the faculty members are actively engaged in various research activities – attending seminars/conferences/workshops, presenting research papers and writing articles for the journals.
The department organises various activities every year – Quiz Competition, Poetic Recitation Competition, Declamation Contest, Paper Reading Contest and Extension Lectures. Screening of movies and plays has been a regular feature of the department to facilitate the understanding of the prescribed syllabus among the students.
The department also has a Language lab and a departmental library. The teachers have been constantly modifying and updating teaching methods in keeping with the challenges and demands of the time.
